Read this before ranking towns: these figures describe the students who live in each town, wherever they go to school, and they are a snapshot of one school year. They are not a grade of the town’s schools. Test results track family circumstances closely — on this site’s own model, six family-background variables explain most of the difference in the state’s achievement index between districts — so a ranking on raw results largely sorts towns by income and student need. The results-vs-demographics page holds those circumstances constant, and every town’s own School Results page compares its district with fifteen districts serving similar students. Rank 1 is the lowest figure on every chart: a sort order, not a verdict. Small towns can move several places on one year’s cohort.

SAT reading and writing: average score of resident students — all towns

Connecticut gives the SAT to every public-school eleventh-grader in the spring. Each bar is the average evidence-based reading and writing score (200–800) of students who live in the town, . Sorted lowest to highest; rank 1 is the lowest average, which describes the figure, not the town. Towns whose resident eleventh-graders are too few for the state to publish are not shown.

A town's figure is the mean across its school types with a published value, weighted by resident enrollment in each; the table names the school types behind every figure.

How this ranking is made

Average score = the mean section score of the town's resident eleventh-graders, as the state publishes it for each school type; share meeting the benchmark = the share at or above the state's proficiency cut score for that section. The state publishes no single all-types figure per town, so this page computes one: the mean of the published school-type figures, weighted by each type's resident enrollment.

  • Only the school types with a high school carry a figure. A town in a regional high-school district has its SAT figure under “Regional Schools”; its own K–8 district has none. The table shows which types each figure rests on. The enrollment weights are whole-school counts, not eleventh-grade counts, which matters only where two or more types carry a figure.
  • Suppression. A school type with fewer than 20 tested resident students has no published figure and is left out, never counted as 0. Small towns with no published type at all are not ranked, so this page lists fewer towns than the grade 3–8 pages.
  • Every student sits the test. Because the SAT is the state's grade-11 assessment, participation is near-universal, unlike national averages that reflect only students who chose to take it.
  • Year. The latest school year in which the state has published a figure for at least 100 towns; the year is printed on each chart.

Average scores track family circumstances closely, and the smallest towns move most from year to year. The results-vs-demographics page holds those circumstances constant.
