October 26, 2022

Good Morning Colchester Families, Faculty and Staff,

I want to take this opportunity to announce that at last night’s regularly scheduled Board of
Education meeting, the Board accepted the recommendation of the Administration and
unanimously appointed Mr. Michael Mal, Social Studies Teacher at Bacon Academy, as Bacon
Academy’s new assistant principal.

We were most fortunate to have a candidate of Michael’s caliber to be interested in pursuing
this educational leadership opportunity.

Michael has taught at Bacon Academy for eleven (11) years. He is a social studies teacher and
has served as the Director of the Summer School for the past eight (8) years. Additionally, Mr.
Mal has served as a volunteer assistant football coach, Senior Capstone Project Coordinator,
NEASC Steering Committee member, TEAM Mentor, and was Colchester’s Teacher of the Year
(2019 -2020). Mr. Mal will be beginning his new responsibilities on Tuesday, November 1, 2022.

In addition, the Board accepted the recommendation of the Administration and unanimously
appointed Ms. Laurie Labato-DiTomasso to the position of Supervisor of Pupil Services and
Special Education. Laurie comes to us from Meriden with 26 years’ experience. She has served
as a special education teacher, reading specialist, inclusion based special education teacher,
autism specialist, district wide special education reading specialist, and most recently as the
special education elementary department chair. Laurie will begin her new responsibilities in
late November.

We are very pleased to welcome Michael Mal and Laurie Labato-DiTomasso to our
administrative team and to the Colchester School Community. When you have the opportunity,
please share your congratulations and welcome them!

Sincerely,

Dr. Thomas Y. McDowell,
Superintendent of Schools
