Dear Students, Staff and Families:
I am excited to share some wonderful news and invite you to attend a special meeting of the Board of
Education on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 5:00 PM at William J. Johnston Middle School.
I am pleased to announce that the State of Connecticut has officially approved Colchester's application for
a new “school within a school” magnet program at Bacon Academy. This marks a significant step forward
for our district. Colchester initially submitted its application last year, proposing innovative programs
focused on careers in public safety and allied health. Over the past several months, we have refined
these program offerings and forged a partnership with the University of New Haven, ensuring that
students enrolled in the magnet program will have the unique opportunity to earn 12 college credits while
still attending Bacon Academy.
We would be honored if you could join us on Monday night for a detailed presentation on the proposed
program. This will also be an excellent opportunity to ask questions, provide feedback, and hear directly
from the Board of Education before they vote on the adoption of the program. The presentation will cover
key aspects of the program, including:
● Defined career pathways and program curriculum
● Our partnership with the University of New Haven
● Transportation logistics for magnet students
● State funding and Magnet Program grants
● Construction reimbursement details
● Participation in extracurricular activities and athletics
● The broader benefits this program will bring to all Colchester students
As we move forward with this exciting initiative, I would like to take a moment to recognize the hard work
and dedication of the Bacon Academy Magnet Working Group, whose commitment has been instrumental
in bringing this vision to life.
Thank you for your continued support and your dedication to the students of Colchester. We hope you
can join us for this important meeting and contribute to the conversation as we embark on this exciting
new chapter for our schools.
Sincerely,
Daniel Sullivan
