INTERPRETATION GUIDE
The 2022/23 student performance results for Colchester Public Schools has been
presented in a simplified format to provide viewers with greater clarity of Colchester students’
present level of performance.
The District Student Achievement page represents the combined percentage of students
meeting grade level benchmarks on the standardized tests that are administered at each grade
level (i.e., DIBELS, Smarter Balanced, CT-SAT). Even though each of these assessments
measure slightly different skills, combining the percentage of students at the benchmark across
all tested grades provides viewers with an idea about how the district is performing as a whole.
Each school page has a display of the overall percentage of students meeting benchmark on the
tests that are available for the respective grade band.
The Academic Program Highlights page celebrates some of the significant achievements
of Colchester students that are not measured by standardized tests. It is important that viewers
are aware of the variety of ways in which students can achieve challenging, real-world standards
beyond just test results.
Members of the public must take note of the following in order to accurately interpret the scores:
1. The students tested in 2022 are different from the students tested in 2023. It is not
possible to conclude that increases or decreases from year to year are only a result of
improvements or failures.
2. The percentage of students meeting benchmark do not represent the total population of
students enrolled in Colchester Public Schools (e.g., Grades 9, 10 and 12 are not
represented in the CT-SAT scores).
3. Tests are short and assess only skills related to reading, math, and science.
a. Each test is typically given on one single day in the spring of each year.
b. Students sometimes answer as few as 40 questions in a skill area.
c. Other important skills such as writing essays, thinking like a historian, performing
a musical composition, or making decisions about a healthy lifestyle are taught in
school, but not assessed by these tests.
4. The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessment given to
students in grades K-2 is not administered by the State, so results are not available on
EdSight.
