Thank you for opportunity to provide comment on the education budget.
Now is not the time to cut teachers from Bacon Academy, or any school. This is not the time for
bigger class sizes or reduced elective opportunities for students. The budget focus is to strengthen
instructional supports for students; well this starts with the teacher in the classroom.
Teachers are experiencing wider gaps in student ability levels in their classes requiring additional
levels of differentiation and more remediation of background skills.
Teachers are also helping more students than ever with their social emotional learning needs
which often causes students to miss class and need after school instruction. After school teachers
are trying to teach multiple lessons so the students may not be getting as much support as
needed.
Student behavior in class has been degraded due to the hybrid learning model. Teachers are also
taking time with individual students to help them build behaviors to increase their capacity for
learning.
With larger class sizes, students get less of the teachers attention to help academically,
emotionally or behaviorally.
Here's a little math for a 90 minute class; over simplified.
30 students - each student can get 3 minutes of the teachers attention per class. 270 minutes in 90
days of classes.
24 students - each student can get 3.75 minutes of the teachers attention per class. 337.5 minutes
in 90 days of classes.
Those extra minutes can go a long way in a lot of ways.
Thank you for your service to this town.
Respectfully,
Laurie Lindsey
