As requested, between the dates of January 6, 2020 and January 10, 2020, Mystic
Air Quality Consultants, Inc. conducted comprehensive radon sampling in two buildings
belonging to the Colchester Public Schools. The testing was conducted in accordance
with Connecticut General Statute (CGS) 10-220(d), the Connecticut Department of
Public Health Radon Program, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

The sampling was conducted in the William Johnston Middle School and the
Colchester Elementary School. Since the previous round of sampling, the William
Johnston Middle School has undergone extensive renovations. The center section of the
school was almost completely changed with extensive slab modification, addition, and a
second floor added. The two outer wings also underwent renovations but was much more
cosmetic with minimal slab alteration on the cafeteria wing. Based upon these changes,
every first-floor room, fitting the testing criteria, in the center section of the school were
tested. The existing outer wing footprints were retested following the ten percent testing
model. The previous school had a sub slab depressurization, radon mitigation system,
which was removed during the renovation activities. The previous location of this falls
within the new center section, which was comprehensively sampled.

The sampling conducted at Colchester Elementary School was conducted in ten
percent of the previously sampled locations. These testing locations were mainly
composed of classrooms, laboratories, cafeterias, libraries, auditoriums, shops,
gymnasiums, and staff offices. Testing was conducted during a time of HVAC heating,
closed building conditions, and the absence of construction activities.

The sampling was conducted with passive short-term radon testing kits utilizing
activated charcoal collection media. Following the protocols listed above, the test kits
were deployed one per every 2000 square feet of continuous room space. Blind duplicate
samples were deployed in ten percent of the sample locations. The duplicates were
systematically arranged to measure the precision of the sampling. Additionally, blank
samples were submitted to measure the accuracy of the testing. These blank samples were
not exposed but were shipped, handled, and analyzed in the same fashion as the test kits.
The blank samples were conducted in five percent of the sample locations. The kits
remained in the test rooms for a three-day sampling period. Upon collection the samples
were sent to a National Radon Safety Board (NSRB) accredited laboratory for analysis.

Enclosure (1) contains the summary sheet for each school tested. During the
time of the survey, none of the sample locations returned results at or above the
EPA and State of Connecticut action level of 4.0 picocuries per liter of air. At this
time no further testing is required this year for the listed schools. Please note that
according to the Connecticut General Statute (CGS) 10-220(d), testing is required every
five years from this point on regardless of the results.

Enclosure (3) contains the State of Connecticut Radon Testing Report Forms.
These forms provide a summary of the sampling activities and results to the State
Department of Health. The testing company will submit these forms to the State within
five working days. It is required that a copy of this report be kept available in the main
office for staff and parental review.
