Proposal:
It is proposed that the Colchester Board of Education establish a standing sub-committee for
curriculum that replaces the two ad-hoc curriculum committees. This curriculum committee will
set at least four meetings annually to fulfill the obligations and responsibilities as proposed
below.

This curriculum committee, as per the BOE Bylaws, shall advise the Board of Education but not
determine policy. This curriculum committee’s primary responsibilities shall be as follows:
   ● Work with administration to establish a curriculum review schedule and monitor the
       progress of curriculum implementation
   ● Review new curricula proposed by Colchester educator curriculum committees
       assembled by administration
   ● Make recommendations to the full Board of Education for the adoption of curricula and
       Programs of Study
   ● Review policies related to curriculum as found in series 5000 Students and 6000
       Instruction

Rationale:
   ● Connecticut Boards of Education are required by law to establish curriculum committees.
   ● Establishing one standing curriculum committee will provide a more streamlined process
for meeting and reviewing curriculum, as compared to hosting multiple ad-hoc
      committees.
   ● Consistency in committee membership will support members of the committee with a
deep knowledge and understanding of the process for developing and implementing
curriculum, inclusive of the associated challenges and resources that are required.
