Thanks to the hard work and collaborative effort of Dave Mason, Chris Petersen, and Peter
Arseneault, Bacon Academy was awarded a 2020 Perkins Supplemental Grant from the State of
Connecticut Career and Technology Education program in the amount of $49,250 to replace
some equipment in our Manufacturing and Engineering programs, as well as add in some new
equipment, acquire training and develop new curriculum. This is a very exciting opportunity
for staff and students and will provide great opportunity and experience for students moving
forward.
Since we will be purchasing new equipment to replace our old outdated machines, we need to
remove and dispose of three lathes that currently exist in our Manufacturing program. Two
years ago we had a professional vendor, Andersen Machinery (who is a state approved vendor
and handles sales and service for many technical programs across the state) advised us of the
status of our current machinery and recommended upgrade if possible.
1. A JET lathe in Room 1805. This piece of equipment is functional, however it does not have
the capabilities needed to align with our current educational programming and doesn't have the
advanced capabilities to align with industry. It was acquired in 2003. It is becoming
increasingly challenging to find replacement parts as the machine breaks down.
2. A Rockwell lathe in Room 1805. This piece of equipment is from the 1970s. Unfortunately
we do not use it because of safety concerns, as well as functionality that is severely limited due
to its condition.
3. A small benchtop JET lathe in Room 1802 was acquired through a grant in 2003; it is
missing a lot of capabilities and functionality. We cannot get replacement parts for this
machine either.
We are requesting permission to dispose of these three machines. We have new machines
coming in to replace them, utilizing the Perkins Supplemental Grant funds. Also, these
machines are unsafe to use with students, and are taking up much needed floor space for our
new machines that will be coming in.
We are very excited to be a part of this amazing opportunity to acquire cutting edge, modern
equipment with advanced capabilities. This will be a major upgrade to our labs and will provide
students the opportunity to engage in authentic, real life, industry aligned opportunities.
